We tend to go where the money is. With healthcare, that means hospitals and insurers. As patients, we often focus our attention on medicines and doctors. But, are these the things that make us healthy?
You should know that access to good medical care is a fairly small part of what makes us healthy. Behaviors and “socieioeconomic” factors make up 70% of health! What does that mean?
Healthy Behaviors mean things like:
- Not smoking
- Alcohol moderation
- Balanced diet
- Safe sex
- Avoiding Risky Behaviors
Socioeconomic factors are things like:
- Higher incomes
- Social supports (Family and friends to help)
- Clean Housing
- Clean air
While some of these things you can control and some you cannot. Your job is to do the best you can to improve what you can!
